My Own Personal Myth

MY Own Personal Myth
leaves me in a stuck state--
a betwixt and between ambiguity:
Mother is RIGHT, love is CONDITIONAL
Do it her way and I am accepted.
Father demands:
THINK FOR YOURSELF!
Do not give away your personal authority
to the minister or the church.
Mother believes, “The world is in fact, 6000 years old.”
the proof is in the Bible.
Father commands, “Don’t take any of this too seriously!”
as he points to my brand new Bible,
The struggle then is to find,
maintain and achieve some balance
for myself.
Mom was horrified when I, an over 50 adult announced
“At my funeral, I want the service to include
Elvis Presley singing I DID IT MY WAY.”
As if to say, “Janet, how dare you!”
Daddy implied, “I believe in you.
Don’t blow it.”
